Changing work permits | The Irish Times Editorial – Thu, May 28, 2009

The Government has found a way to reduce the number of unemployed in Ireland. Make it extremely difficult for immigrants who may have lost their job to stay here. This has to be challenged:

“The Government has repeatedly stated the importance of the integration of migrants into Irish society. Forcing that minority of work permit holders who become redundant to choose between leaving the country or becoming undocumented is sending out the wrong message and will do nothing for the thousands – Irish and non-Irish – facing unemployment. This measure should be reconsidered urgently in consultation with unions, employers and migrant organisations.”

It is about time that the government got real about jobs in Ireland. Two of the parties you mention the government and the public sector “gravy train” unions are the specific reason we are in the state we are in. Our developers, aka Fianna Fail said they needed a hand from migrant labour to get all those apartments built. Then they needed the migrants to step up to the plate and buy the apartments because they built 70,000 too many! Strangely, we now have 70,000 immigrants on welfare.

I suppose we could solve the problem by putting them in the 70,000 apartments at our own expense, pay their rent for them with rent supplements. We can also pay the 20,000 per year welfare bill from taxes and the money we borrow at extortinate rates (for NAMA) on an exploding bond market! Ever try to sign on in Poland? Ever try to sign on in Romania? Ever try to sign on in Bulgaria or China? You should try it and you might come back to planet earth!

They cannot go home because there is no welfare in their own countries. Yet now we are experiencing another surge as 30,000 RSI numbers issued since january. Where are the jobs these people are coming for? Are the dole queues an illusion? Is it my imagination that people are loosing their jobs everyday? Yet more are coming and are on the way even as Irish people talk about US, Canada and Australia. We may need tourism but not dole tourism! Meanwhile, our own schools, hospitals, pensioners are being targeted left right and centre!

I am Irish and I make no apology for being Irish! Look after the Irish and their children first then if there is any money left, dole it out, by all manner and means to the orphans and migrants from the rest of the world! I looked up the list of registered charities and could not find Ireland anywhere on the list! We must also find the money to pay out to the people who were sexually abused and tortured by the Irish State with the full backing of solicitors, barristers, judges, doctors and psychiatrists they, (our own) people should be looked after first then the rest can get in the very long queue.
