ILR Notice Board: Protests, Petitions, and Reports
There are a number of things that have been brought to my attention recently, so to cover everything I’m going to give each of them a short mention.
No To NAMA
Tomorrow, the 12th of September there is a demonstration being organised to protest against the implementation of NAMA.
From the No to Nama facebook page:
“The voice of the people of Ireland will be heard at the ‘No to NAMA’ Street Protest on Saturday 12th September 2009. The protest will start at the Garden of Remembrance (at the top of O’Connell St) at 2pm and will march on the Dail.”
The street protest is being organised by Dave Browne who set up http://www.irishpeopleunion.com . Indymedia article here.
The following Saturday, the 19th of September there will be another protest, organised by the Alliance Against Cuts and which is backed by the Unite Union, Branches of SIPTU, People Before Profit, Socialist Workers Party, Socialist Party, Community Sector, Canal Communites, Tenants Associations, Is Feidir Linn, Sinn Fein, Eirigi and others. Again it starts at the Garden of Remembrance at 1pm.

The National Women’s Council of Ireland
The National Women’s Council of Ireland have a petition which they would like you to sign.
It states:
“We the undersigned call on the Irish Government to protect women, families and communities in Budget 2010 by honouring the commitments it has made, both nationally and internationally, through the EU and the UN, to women and women’s equality.
In particular we call on Government to;
1. Maintain social welfare payments including child benefit at their current rates.
2. Continue to fund local and national women’s organisations.
3. Make no further cuts to the National Women’s Council of Ireland, the strong, independent voice for women, nationally and internationally.
Anti Racism Network Against BNP in NI
The Anti Racism Network is protesting at the proposed setting up of the BNP national call-centre in Dundonald, Northern Ireland.
They are asking people to add their signatures (and organisations/trade unions etc if appropriate) and would like people to also forward the letter to everyone in their address books. According to the ARN the aim is to
“…gather as much support as possible with the idea of launching a broad based campaign of political leaders, community and trade union leaders and anti racism activists committed to having the centre shut down.”
You can add your name to the letter by by emailing celebrating_diversity@ymail.com
You can also download a Word version of the letter here.
EAPN & Social Welfare Payments
Finally, The European Anti Poverty Network (Ireland) has a new factsheet out called Social Welfare, How Ireland Compares in Europe (PDF). The details in the fact sheet may not be too surprising to readers of ILR. They confirm the arguments made by Michael Taft on a number of occasions, but with social welfare rates being highlighted for significant cuts in the McCarthy report, it is good that more facts are being made available to counter the political argument that they are currently ‘generous‘ or ‘lavish‘.

We welcome and encourage lively discussion from the public about articles on Irish Left Review. You can leave a comment using the form at the bottom of the page. Please read through the existing comments before posting your own.
