The Dáil votes this Wednesday on the IMF-EU package – probably the single most important vote in this country’s history since the Treaty Debates in 1922. Many commentators have concluded that this is an extremely bad deal for Ireland. David McWilliams says the package “will sink Ireland”.
Not only has the interest rate been set at a punitively high rate, but also no burden-sharing has been forced on bondholders for the gambling debts they incurred, and inflicted on the rest of us. In addition, the conditions attached to the loans represent a massive restriction on the freedom of future governments to adopt policies in the public interest.
However, there is still time to act. If you could convince enough of your TDs to vote against it, it might just be enough to defeat the package in the Dail this Wednesday. This would create a situation where the EU would have to re-negotiate a better deal for Ireland. Remember, the EU desperately needs a deal, so we should use this bargaining power to say: “We don’t want any loans from the IMF and we want EU loans at 2 or 3% – take it our leave it”.
So, I am urging you to please take a few minutes today to phone your TDs’ office.
You could simply say :
“I urge you to vote No to the IMF-EU package and to demand a re-negotiation on better terms for Ireland. If you vote yes I will not vote for you in the next general election.”
Or alternatively call Leinster House at 01-618300. You will get reception, ask for your TD by name, and you will be put through to his/her office.
Thanks for reading this, and I hope you will consider taking action. Please forward to others.
