Economist Debates: Arab revolutions: This house believes that the West should keep out of the Arab world’s revolutions

Debate between As'ad AbuKhalil, Professor of political science, California State University, Stanislaus who is defending the motion, and Menzies Campbell, of the UK's Liberal Democrats who is opposing it.

From As'ad AbuKhalil
"Sir Campbell wants Western governments to "nurture democracy and to exercise a benign influence". This is the same argument made by colonial powers after the first world war either to deny independence to certain countries, or to accord them "mandate" systems—presumably to nurture their political development."
